Shooting pain down your leg? Numbness from your back to your foot? Our expert physiotherapists are specialists in treating sciatica — one of the most debilitating and misunderstood nerve conditions.
Sciatica is not a diagnosis — it is a symptom caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back through your hips, buttocks, and down each leg. At Phrapy, we focus on finding and treating the underlying cause, not just masking the pain.
The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disc at the L4–L5 or L5–S1 level, but it can also result from piriformis syndrome, spinal stenosis, or spondylolisthesis. Our physiotherapists are trained to differentiate between these causes and create the most effective treatment plan.
With targeted physiotherapy, most patients experience significant improvement within 8–12 sessions — and avoid spinal injections or surgery.

Sciatica has several causes, and effective treatment depends on accurate diagnosis — which is exactly what we provide.
The most common cause — a slipped disc pressing on the sciatic nerve root, causing shooting leg pain.
The piriformis muscle in the buttock compresses the sciatic nerve, causing buttock and leg pain.
Narrowing of the spinal canal that irritates the sciatic nerve — common in older adults.
Age-related disc wear that reduces disc height and puts pressure on nerve roots.
Uterus and postural changes during pregnancy compress the sciatic nerve, causing leg pain.
Sciatica following a road accident, fall, or heavy lifting injury affecting the lumbar spine.

I had a 20-day physiotherapy session, and the results were excellent. On the first day, I couldn't sit comfortably for even an hour due to severe discomfort. Under ma'am's guidance and treatment, I can now sit comfortably for 5–6 hours with much better stamina. I highly recommend this clinic to anyone facing similar issues.
Consulting Dr. Sushmita turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made. She took the time to thoroughly understand my condition and accurately identified the root cause of my pain. Thanks to her guidance, my back pain has reduced considerably and my posture has improved.

Sciatica is nerve pain caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the body, running from your lower back to your feet. The most common cause is a disc herniation at L4–L5 or L5–S1, though piriformis syndrome, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis can also cause sciatica.
Ordinary back pain stays in the back. Sciatica radiates from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg — sometimes reaching the foot. It may also cause numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg. These nerve symptoms are the defining feature of sciatica.
Yes — in the majority of cases. Research shows that physiotherapy, when correctly targeted at the underlying cause, is as effective as surgery for most disc-related sciatica. We use traction, neural mobilisation, manual therapy, and specific exercise to decompress the nerve and resolve symptoms.
Most patients notice improvement within 4–6 sessions. Full resolution typically takes 10–16 sessions depending on the cause and severity. Chronic or post-surgical sciatica may require longer treatment.
You should avoid complete rest — it makes sciatica worse in the long term. However, high-impact activity should be avoided until assessed. Your physiotherapist will prescribe specific, safe exercises that relieve nerve pressure and accelerate recovery.
Neural flossing (nerve glide exercises), McKenzie press-ups, piriformis stretches, and gentle core strengthening are commonly used. However, the wrong exercise can worsen sciatica — always get assessed first before following any exercise programme.
